"Part 13: The Desert"
"...He felt the heat before it came, and sprinted blind and fast as the forest around him was bathed in flames. Trees exploded apart, red hot embers shot in every direction catching more brush and leaves aflame. The light of the fire behind him helped light the way, but the heat at his back was unbearable and the smoke stung at his eyes. Over the roar of the flames Michael could hear the Dragon’s wings beating once more as it came around for a second pass. Michael dove over a cluster of stones just as he heard the roar of the stream of fire that shot from the mouth of the beast. The flames ripped through trees and blasted stone apart from its sheer heat. Michael had barely found his cover in time and was certain that most of his body hair had been singed off.
He knew he was not far from the rocky cliffs, but he feared as he climbed the Dragon would simply burn him from the rock like an insect, but as if in response to this fear, the Dragon returned to its perch upon the mountain. Its eyes gleamed down at him, inviting him, challenging him. Michael rose to his feet, his body bathed in sweat from the heat of the fires around him. The firelight danced across his toned flesh and tender scars. He held the look of a hero of some long ago tale. A figure which had taken an intense journey to forge, but still stood as he did before, still stood as just a man, as the last of the Cross.
Michael looked up the rock wall, tracing the cliffs, and edges, up and up until he met the gaze of his challenger. “Ready or not…here I come…” he said beneath his breath. Flames trickled from the nostrils of the Dragon so high upon his perch, a single plume of smoke rising into the sky as if scoffing at Michael’s bravery."
